Our Reading Program

Our reading program is a one-to-one tutoring system designed to teach children who struggle with reading and spelling due to dyslexia or other learning disabilities. Our program is an Orton-Gillingham, also known as Structured Literacy, influenced approach to reading and spelling, which means that it is simultaneously multisensory, systematic, and cumulative with direct and explicit instruction in both synthetic and analytic phonics. The principles implemented in the Barton System are consistent with current findings on the characteristics of effective interventions. There are more than a dozen independent studies that provide evidence of the effectiveness of the program, since its release in 1999.

All the latest scientific, independent, replicated reading research supports the Orton-Gillingham, also known as Structured Literacy, sequence and methodology as “best practices” when teaching reading to students with dyslexia. Orton-Gillingham, also known as Structured Literacy, is the research-based approach recommended by the International Dyslexia Association.
